S. Anthony of Padua

Patron saint of children, teachers, seekers of lost objects.

He was a gifted speaker.

Here he is shown in a Franciscan habit from Giorgione's painting of him, Madonna and Child and St. Rock.

S. Bernardine of Sienna

Patron saint of speakers, advertisers, lungs, hoarseness, compulsive gamblers

Symbol: tablet inscribed with sun and IHS.

S. Bernardine was such a dynamic speaker, thousands flocked to hear him. He was a noted peacemaker during the early Italian Renaissance.

S. Joan of Arc

In French Jeanne d'Arc; la Pucelle (the Maid)

Patron saint of France, captives, imprissoned people, martyrs, rape victims, soldiers

Symbols used: dove which rose from her burning pyre, crucifix which she called for at the last moment, above her head is the flames representing her death.

She wears the armor she wore to sacring of Charles VII at Reims.

S. Rocco, also known as S. Rock, S. Roque

Patron saint for plague victims, dogs, bachelors,skin diseases, doctors

Feast Day: August 16

   

 

 

Symbols: Dog with bread, pilgrim staff, displaying plague sore on leg

While on his pilgrimage, S. Rocco treated plague victims, eventually getting the plague himself. He retreated to a cave and a dog from the area brought him bread from his master's table. The dog also licked his plague sore. S. Rocco survived the plague thanks to the dog.

Above S. Rocco wears a costume from Giorgione's picture. He carries a pilgrim staff and wears a typical hat of the pilgrim. On it are placed pilgrim badges collected at each church along the pilgrimage. He wears the cockle shell of St. James on the cloak.

S. Raphael

S. Raphael was one of the seven archangels who stood before God. His name means 'God has healed.' His healing is shown in the story of Tobias, where he restores sight to an old man and guards Tobias in his journey

Patron of travelers, the blind, physicians

Feast day: alternately listed as September 29 and October 24
