This guardian angel was designed for my friend Jon Breitenbach... who brought me into his choir and introduced me to a whole new world. It represents the archangel St. Raphael who was sent by the Lord to heal.

Raphael only appears in the Book of Tobias. He appears first assuming human form. See The Catholic Encyclopedia for more information on him.

The Archangel costume and wings are based on a polychromed wood sculpture from Naples, Italy, in the late 16th century. The Azarias costume comes from a follower of Andrea del Verocchio, Tobias and the Angel, c. 1470-80. Both are found in Angels in Art by Nancy Grubb, Artabras, 1995.
