A Gothic Romance Paper Doll told in the style of the Limbourg Brothers

The Little Mermaid

"Once upon a time there was a Little Mermaid who loved a handsome Prince..."

The Little Mermaid and the Prince paper dolls are based on the work of the three Limbourg brothers from France. These artists worked for Jean, Duc de Berry, who was one of the world's great patrons around 1404. The brothers most famous work for him was Tres riches heures du duc de Berry, which consisted of brilliantly colored, intricate drawings of court & country life throughout the 12 months of the year. The cover background is a simplified version of one of these paintings, The Temptation of St. Anthony.

The paintings are created using Adobe Photoshop SE2 and Corel Painter IX. Painter enable the actual "painting" of the pictures, while Photoshop allows for creation of brushes (specialized images). These pictures are © 2006 David Claudon

The Prince starts as Adam from the Limboug's Garden of Eden. He wears particolored hose and scalloped houppelandes, one with a draped chaperon (turban). Both costumes are based on one's found in the Limbourgs' work.
The Little Mermaid in human form is based on the Limbourgs' Eve from the Garden of Eden. As Princess she wears a yellow corset (a long-sleeved, full skirted garment). Over this is work a white sleeveless surcoat, and finally a purple, elaborately patterned false-sleeved gown. She wears a long necklace with pendant. As an umarried woman her hair is worn loose, and on her head is a fur roll escoffion with three plumes.
