From the beginning, I felt lighting was very important, making the rooms more set designs than just vignettes. My pictures try to capture the feel of the lighting. Below are four of my 1"=1' room settings. Click on the pictures to see a larger image. "Ruby's Christmas" by C. David ClaudonCreated for the 1980 Washington (DC) National National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts Houseparty, this room shows an elderly woman and her cats celebrating Christmas watching The Muppets Christmas special on tv. She has her one present open under the tree, face powder. Ruby is a survivor. She was inspired by a Christmas letter to my mother from an elderly friend who described having no one around for Christmas. Touchingly she noted, "my hair has turned all white." In this setting I created almost everything here except for the plastic radiator, metal lamp, and plastic Christmas tree. The rug was created by using no-wale corderoy and applying the design with marking pens. The success of the room led to my creating a line of cats which I sold through my business. "Geary Street 1976" by C. David ClaudonIn 1976, when attending the NAME National Houseparty in San Francisco, CA, we received the two "stained glass" windows by the Kummerows. These windows inspired me to design this 1'=1" scale San Francisco pizzaria, loosely based on one we ate in on Geary Street. I constructed or redid most of what is in the room. "The Wages of Sin" by C. David ClaudonThis room, depicting a bordello in 1904 New Orleans, caused quite a stir when I wrote about it. I described Marguerite, the prostitute who is checking out her "wages of sin" in the mirror and described how she was, like many of her sisters in Storyville, a good Catholic. No one took offense that she was a prostitute... only that she was Catholic. "April 1912" by C. David Claudon This room was based on an English Arts and Crafts design in the design magazine, The Studio from 1912. The leaded glass windows reflect a rather cool rainy April morning. The newpaper in the woman's hand announces the sinking of the Titanic. The Winslow Homer painting over the fireplace suggests a woman reading by the sea waiting for a sailor's return. The painting over the chair, "Hylas and the Sea Nymphs," deals with the Greek myth of a young man drowned by the water nymphs. The rug is a heat-transfer on no-wale corderoy. This page was created by C. David Claudon. Last revised September 2, 2003 . [
